One day, I received a beautiful bouquet of flowers. I love getting flowers. Immediately, I found an empty vase and filled it with water. I placed the beautiful arrangement on my TV stand, which is close to the window. As the day came to a close, I noticed my flowers were already droopy and limp.

Was the house too hot? Were the flowers dying before I even received them? Did they stay out of water too long?

I went to bed that night disappointed with the way my flowers looked.

The next morning, I awoke to sunshine peaking through my bedroom blinds. After having a time of devotion, I headed to the kitchen to prepare some breakfast. While making my coffee, I looked into the living room at my flowers. They were no longer in the same droopy, limp state that they were in before I went to bed. All of them were perked up, leaning towards the window where the beautiful sun rays were shining in.

Like those flowers God has called us to lean into His light-- His son, Jesus, our Lord.

In the Bible, Peter says, "But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light." 1 Peter 2:9

We are given the marvelous opportunity to turn to Jesus, the Son of God, for our source of energy and strength, just like the flowers turned towards the sun for their strength.

Many times we rely on our own energy and strength to get through life. God wants us to depend on Him, not on ourselves or the things of this world. He wants us to turn away from the darkness and sin around us, and turn to Him.

As I sat down in the living room close to the window, I sipped my hot coffee with the sun beaming on my face. I exhaled and thought of the death that I was suppose to die and the darkness that surrounded that day back on Calvary. Jesus, the Light of the World, came and took my place and died the death that should have been mine. With my face warmed by the sun I quietly sang to myself,

Joyful joyful we adore You.
God of glory, Lord of love;
hearts unfold like flowers before You,
opening to the sun above.

Bask in His light today and everyday!
