One of the worst things you can do to a kid is give them the excitement of being picked for the team, then never allowing them any playing time. At the end of the day, no one wants to sit on the bench.

I went to a girls' high school basketball game once to watch a few students whom I knew.

This wasn't varsity or even junior varsity. This was the freshman team, full of kids who were just beginning to come into themselves as athletes.

I noticed that the coach only played the same six players. All game, these six players were rotated on and off of the court. These girls must have been awesome because they individually played every single position, from forward to point.

However, there were five other girls on the bench who looked miserable!

Some looked miserable because they were bored. These girls flung cups of water at each other and braided each other's hair. Others looked miserable because they were just waiting for their opportunity to get into the game.

Needless to say, everyone on the bench was miserable because no one wants to sit on the bench.

While this is true in almost every situation, I find it amazing that the one place where people don't want to get into the game is church.

For whatever reason, people seem satisfied to sit on the sidelines while everyone else enjoys "playing time." Here's the thing: when asked to get into the game, many respond with, "I'm not ready," or "I just have a lot going on right now."

I may not be the most avid sports fan, but I do know that those who don't get into the game will inevitably quit the team.

Why? Because sitting on the bench does not allow you to be at your best, and as I heard someone say today, "we are at our best when we are serving others."

Here at Relevant Church, we say, "serving each other is how we roll."

Are you sitting on the bench or are you in the game with one of our ReServe teams? You will never experience all that God has for you until you get in the game. You will never be at your best if you don't engage the God-given gifts and talents with which he's blessed you.

Maybe it's time to get up from the bench and experience God's best for you and get in the game. Sign up for Growth Track, where you will learn how God has uniquely shaped you to serve on His team!
